This intermediate worksheet looks at common language used in kitchens, particularly looking at the names of common cooking utensils and at how we talk about things we like and dislike in kitchens (e.g. “I hate cleaning after I cook dinner for friends”). The worksheet also focuses on gerunds, particularly gerunds with likes and dislikes (e.g. “I like baking),
The worksheet starts with a few basic warm up questions, and then students must read a conversation between 2 friends who are cooking a meal together. The conversation contains underlined vocabulary such as “pot” or “sink” which the students must then match to a series of pictures. The conversation is phrased in such a way that even if they don’t know the word, they should be able to guess based on context.
After this students will read a brief explanation of gerunds and how they work with likes and dislikes (there are several examples of these in the conversation on page 1), and then they will interview a partner with some questions about likes and dislikes in the kitchen (e.g. “Do you like eating spicy food for breakfast?”). The students will then write down their partner’s opinions and present them to the class. After that students will write a text about their own likes and dislikes in the kitchen.
After that, the students will read two recipes, one for fried rice and one for banana bread, and say what utensils would be needed for making them. Finally, students will ask each other some more questions relating to food and cooking and kitchens. Enjoy!
